Processing cultivated steak for humans is “superhard” so we are focusing on cultivated pet food

An interview with the first startup to win European Union registration for laboratory-grown meat for use in pet food.

Bringing cultivated steak for humans to market is “superhard” so we are focusing on cultivated pet food, says Tomáš Kubeš, head of strategic projects at Bene Meat Technologies, a Czech startup developing cultivated meat for use in pet food.

In this interview, Kubeš, an executive with the Czech startup, says he believes that Bene will soon come to market with its cultivated meat aimed at “our four-legged friends”.

Bene is the first to win European Union registration for laboratory-grown meat for use in pet food.

Kubeš says that pet food customers are already used to hybrid products in the space (part traditional meat, part plant-based), so bringing cultivated meat to the pet space will not be a big leap.

Kubeš said the firm was able to scale up production and offer prices to make the product commercially viable.

Bene is planning further testing on how its product tastes to animals.

The start-up, set up in 2020, is owned by Czech medical devices producer BTL group.
